Katherine Dunham, former Jo¬ liet resident, ia still receivingr ex¬ cellent notices for her work with the Ballet Fedre, now running in Chicago aa a part o£ the Federal Theater Project. The engagement, originally scheduled to end on February 3, has been extended to February 13.
"L'Ag'ya" is the Utie of the bal¬ let which Miss Dunham created, using the material obtained dur¬ ing her stay in the West Indiea. She trained the group of colored dancera appearing in it .and danc¬ es the solo part of Loulouse, the girl from Martinique who is won away from her sweetheart by means of witchcraft- High spots in the performance are the scenes in wliich the king of the Zombies gives the "cambois" (or charm) to Julot who usea it to entice Lou¬ louse away from her lover. The dance ends with a magnificently effective fighting dance, Tag'ya, from which the ballet takes iU
The original music written for Miss Dunham's work incorporates the primitive drum-beat rhythms used by the natives of Martinique and adds to the authenticity of the colorful costumes. Settings are aco—ate representations of West Ind n scenes and were designed "<m lally for this production.
