Description
In the summer of 1911 the legislature passed and Governor Deneen signed the appropriations bill to grant money for the construction of a women's building or dormitory at Western . The funds were not made available , however , until 1912 , when the construction began . By that time Walter P . Morgan had become president , so he supervised the construction . The new building was officially named Monroe Hall , in honor of James Monroe , who had been president when the Military Tract of western Illinois was surveyed and opened for settlement . Many years later , the building was renamed Grote Hall , in honor of Caroline Grote , who created the country school teacher training course at Western . In 1991 , Grote Hall was torn down .
