"This 1889 photograph shows the Ellis and Dunsworth Meat Market , on the left , and the Union Hotel , located on Depot Street . Built in 1869 , the hotel had a dining room , a sample room (for salesmen to display their goods) , a dozen guest rooms , and a second-story verandah . After 1883 , it was also the location of the Colchester Independent . Welsh immigrant J.D . Trew was the hotel proprietor. " "McDonough County Historic Sites " by John E . Hallwas , p . 80 .
