Wednesday, September 3,2008 ISSUE 4, VOL. 109 Detox brings ""Chicago atmosphere' By Scott Raynor courier staff Before the opening of the new nightclub Detox, it will be necessary to construct a 150-foot long, six-foot tall wrought iron fence around the back perimeter of the property. Apparently, the fence is being built to keep future club-goers from falling 15 feet onto the asphalt of the Vineyard Community Church parking lot when the club opens this fall. This and other safety measures, including a free shuttle bus system made to resemble ambulances equipped with flat panel televisions and tattooed with the Detox logo, will be implemented upon its opening. Detox will be located at 1208 N. Lafayette St., at the former site of the Dog Pound bar. The Dog Pound closed down in the summer to make way for the new club, which has only recently been approved by the Macomb City Council after years of resistance. This will be the first club bearing the Detox name, with no relation to the popular Club Detox in London. An additional club will be opening in DeKalb, home of Northern Illinois University. Owner Ransey Vazquez described Detox as ""more of a nightclub than a bar, but will have a ,sports-bar feel,"" and mentioned that there will not be a strict dress code per se, but that Detox will be ""a place where you can go to dress up."" Vazquez wishes to give Macomb a more ""Chicago atmosphere"" and is trying to ""give something new and state-of-the-art to Macomb."" Ransey Vazquez also seeks to entice Macomb with the suggestion of celebrity appearances, specifically noting that B96 Flipside, DJ Dan Morrell (formerly DJ Smurf) and Sammy Sosa will make appearances to Detox at some point after its opening. According to the Detox Web site (www.detoxmacomb. com), Detox will open this fall, although no specific date .is set, and there will be on-site job interviews throughout the next few weeks. ADAM SACASA/PHOTO EDITOR Detox, located at 1208 N. Lafayette St., is expected to open its doors sometime this fall. Beu Health Center gets Excellence Award By Sarah Scott courier staff The Beu Health Center was awarded the Laboratory Excellence Award, announced on Aug. 19. The Excellence award is the Clinical Laboratory Accreditation and Education organization's highest commendation. ""We are extremely pleased to receive this honor, as it acknowledges the level of excellence and commitment to patient care here at Beu Health Center,"" said Mary Margaret Harris, M.S. director of the Beu Health Center. ""This is the second time we have been acknowledged with the excellence award since 2006, when we were first accredited by COLA. Sept. 5 will mark the second time the mobile unit has visited the Western campus. Haupt said the Macomb campus was one of the key areas targeted when the mobile unit began branching its services last year. He added that the mobile unit is currently offered at seven additional public universities, including University of Illinois at Champaign- Urbana, Illinois State, Northern Illinois, Eastern Illinois, Southern Illinois and University of Illinois at Chicago.
