NUMBER 9 The COURIER Reports News of Western Without Fear or Favor, Bias Or Prejudice Nemchock Is Freshman Commander-In-Chief . . . Cabinet Officers Parks, Auburg,Hunting, Black, Johnson, Wood Seven energetic politicians have taken over the reins of Freshman Class leadership as a result of he [the] elections held last Thursday. A record vote was recorded with approximately 800 freshmen streaming to the four polling places across the campus. Gary Nemchock, an art major from Oak Park, nabbed the top position of Freshman Class President. He is presently serving as a member of the Hursh Hall Council, Student Union Building Committee, and Sequel staff. I really am grateful to everyone who voted for me,"" says Gary, ""and I will do my best in this position. Anyone who has any ideas for class projects or Student Government, I wish would talk to me about them."" Capturing the vice - presidential position was Sylvia Parks, a biology major from Chicago. She is a resident of Bennett Hall. New frosh secretary is Sandy Auberg, a business major from Downers Grove. From a field of 18 candidates emerged four victorious senators. Malinda Hunting, a social science major from Highland Park and Jo Woods, an Intermediate major from Little York won the two open women senator seats. The ""male senator positions were won by Darrel Black, social science major from Pekin, and Jon Jackson, pre-law major from Macomb. ""The energetic spirit of this freshman class is tremendous,"" says Student Government President Dave Collins. ""I want to congratulate all the freshmen candidates for the outstanding campaigns they conducted. And I also wish to commend the class as a whole for setting a new voting record."" Polling places were set up in Sherman Hall, Grote Hall, Seal Hall, and the Student Center. As a result of the number of votes casts, final counting took approximately three hours. ""The men of Alpha Phi Omega have done another excellent job of assisting at elections,"" says Elections Chairman Steve Baxter. ""The increased enrollment and increased balloting places have made for a big election which APO has done a fine job with."" Gary Nemchock Sylvia Parks Off-Campus Housing Contracts Up For Renewal Oct. 4-10 All students residing off campus are required to sign contracts on a quarterly basis. ""Nov. 4 to Nov. 10 has been designated as the period during which you should renew your contracts with your householder,"" says Lee Transier, assistant manager of student housing. ""Should you desire to move to another residence, the Housing Office U 106 has a complete list of certified off campus housing available. No contracts are valid if signed prior to Nov. 4. ""If you have any questions,"" adds Transier, ""concerning housing, contact the Housing office. ""All students must live in University Certified Housing. You are responsible for making sure your place of residence is certified."" Feline Female Gets 10 Votes On Frosh Ballot By BARRY FOSTER A near catastrophic hoax shook the freshmen elections last week when a female cat, and mother of four, got her ""name"" on the ballots for secretary - treasurer and received ten votes. The Kitty, whose petition bore the data: Kathleen Katy, Kindergarden- Primary major from Carpentersville, Ill., is a pet of the neighborhood. Journalism student Judy Slifer became aware of the hoax plot; saw a story in the making, and followed it through. A group of kids decided to run Kitty for Secretary-Treasurer in the Frosh elections strictly as a joke. ""The kids put Kitty's name (Kathleen Katy) on a petition, had it signed legally, and turned it in."" According to Student Government President Dave Collins, Elections Chairman Steve Baxter checked the names of those students who signed the petitions. ""In checking the names and addresses of all candidates at the Student Center Information Desk, Steve found that there were three candidates which had no information listed about them,""- said Collins. Collins says that Baxter was then ""informed that the list was not complete and he was to list the candidates with petitions on the ballot in order to make the COURIER deadline."" Consequently, kittish Kathleen Katy's name appeared on the ballots and received ten votes. Prior to residing at 719 West Adams (the Alpha Sig House), Kitty was a guest of the men at Happy Haven, 717 West Adams Street. One of the men from Happy Haven said the news about Kitty came as quite a surprise. ""Nobody from Happy Haven ever made the headlines before,"" he said. Alpha Sigma Alpha President, Jan Smith told the COURIER that her sorority was not behind the plot to hoax the elections. Students Named To Disciplinary Committee The membership for the student-faculty disciplinary committee has now been completed with the naming of students to the committee. At the recent meeting of the newly formed Faculty Senate the names of Ronald Mead, Wayne Sheehan and Carolyn Barnes were approved. Grace McKone and Mary Gushing were approved as alternates. Under the terms of the University Constitution the All-University Student Government submits the names of five students to the Faculty Senate. From this list three of the five are selected. This year the forming of the committee has been delayed because of the transfering [transferring] of responsibilities from the Faculty Council to the Faculty Senate as prescribed in the University Constitution. As of this date this committee is available to meet with students who have allegedly breached the standards and mores of the university community as stipulated in the Student Agreement. In addition to the above names the faculty members on the committee are Dr. George Potter, Dr. Earl Foreman and the student's faculty adviser. Dr. John Henderson, Dean of Student Personnel Services is chairman of the committee. Dr, Simmons, Counselor for Men and Dr. Ehrhardt, Counselor for Women are ex officio members who are-used as consultants and have no vote in any disciplnary [disciplinary] action.
