Sacred Space, Time, Word Amos 5.6-7, 10-15 October 8, 1989 Introduce the New Hymnal's outline. A church Kansas City is reported to have the following slogan: Wake up, sing up, preach up, pray up, stay up, pay up, but never give up or let up or shut up until the cause of Christ in this church and the world is built up. Orders of worship Sunday morning, eucharistic, and baptisms. Praise is the first response so we have hymns of praise. Take the left side of the page and use the right side of the page. This shows the doctrinal structure of what we hold be our faith. You also find responses, poetry, musical settings for singing the Psalms. Some new tunes: Doxology 94; It is also characterized by following the Christian year. The reason the Christian year is important to follow is so that the whole Christian story may be assured of being told. Advent: 195-216; Christmas: 217-255; Epiphany: 217-255; Lent 278-301; Passion/Palm Sunday: 278-281; Easter 301-327; Pentecost: 328- 336. A week ago, in the great cathedral of St. George in Cape Town, the Archbishop opened the sacred concert with prayer. It was an evening to celebrate the grace of God and to prepare for the coming storm. But they did not have to wait long. Bursting through the great doors came the Security Branch, South Africa's FBI. They broke up the sacred gathering sending everyone home and threatening Bishop Tutu. The cathedral is a sanctuary caring for thousands during the past twenty years. Several days later Bishop Tutu made an announcement. The sanctuary must be reconsecrated because it had been defiled by the government. He stands in the tradition of which we are a part. He understands the meaning of sacred space. Sacred Space A. Celebration of the space God gives us in which to live. Hymn 62, All Creatures of our God and King. B. There are special places. Abraham places rocks for an altar, Noah after the flood built an altar. Abraham built an altar at the place where Isaac was to have been sacrificed. And he called it The Lord Will Provide. God said to Isaac, "I am the God of your father Abraham, do not be afraid, I will bless you and you shall have many descendants. Isaac finally found a place to settle, he built an altar there. Jacob arrived at Shechem and placed his tent east of it, and bought the land. He built an altar and called it Elelohey-Israel. David began the great Temple and it was completed under Solomon. It was a place in which the faith was reinforced through liturgies of praise, confession, celebration, and thanksgiving. The care the eagle gives her young 118. Go down into nave. C. Early Christian places of worship were the Jewish Temple. By the end of the first century Jewish Christians were no longer allowed in the Temple. By the second century their places of worship were the catacombs of Rome, the city's burial grounds.
