Peace Promptings Within Isaiah 2.1-4 Intro: "They shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks, nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war anymore." This inscription is to be found on the walls leading to Rockefeller Plaza in NY city. Contained in them is the dream of every thoughtful person since the time of their writing, same 700 years before Christ. War I, War IC, Korea, Viet Nam, Seven-Day War, Cyprus; English and Irish, Afrikaner and Bantu; Black and white; Earl James Ray and Martin Luther King;Harvey Lee Oswald, and PresidentJohn Kennedy; Siren and Robert Kennedy. The divorce down the street, the broken-heart next door, peace is a hard commodtiy to obtain for whatever price we are willing to pay. How often that word is used--peace; sometimes with the stacatto attacks of war, hostility, aggression. Peace, irene, shalom. Ruhe, Friede.... Peace with honor, peace at ear price, beward of those who cry peace, peace, when there is no peace. We keep pushing toward peace. It has been the occupation for centuries. We act as if peace were possible, we use the word. But conflict, tension, stress, confrontation are words built into the contemporary vocabulary with peace almost illegibly smeared on the side of a wall with a can of spray paint. I. The Scripture of the morning assumes that we can do something about peace. Swords into plowshares, spears into pruning hooks. A. The assumption is that people can put instruments of ward into another shape. 1. This pock-marked globe would be transformed if that were the real possiblility. Bombers, fighters, tanks, rifles, research into biological instrumentsof warfare. Summit meetings to agree to slow down the stockpile of weapons; greater budget for defense than ever. It is a truism of history that a strongly armed nation is protected for peace more than a vulnerable nation. 2. Think of what would happen if energies presently used to en-courage and feed hostitlies between people were used for reconciliation. What changes might occur. B. It seems a matter of common sense to assume that there must be sane relationship between being able to conceive of peace and having enough will to produce it. 1. Conceive of spanning thousand sof miles to reach the moon, and then the will to do it produced that one giant step for mankind. 2. Conceive of developing babies from the test tube, combined with the will to do it, and a Dr. does it! 3. Conception and will two factors when put together produce result 4. You w uld think that of all the things which have been conceived and have been coupled with a will to do that peace would be possible in some manner.
