Things You Cannot Live Without: A Mentor Hebrews 7.23-28 October 23, 1994 Two Sundays ago I told you of a shooting incident in the little town of Chama, New Mexico, 19 miles away from our mountain cabin. Two boys, one 16 the other 13, went around town with shotguns, shooting things up. Finally they ran to hide in an abandoned garage. Clay Beazley, 38, the father of three children, decided to go after them. Just as he entered the doorway a shotgun blast was heard, and those watching down the alley saw his body blasted out of the doorway to land on the ground dead. Chama expects on occasion to hear pistol shots at the Silverado Bar or at Ben's Lounge or at Foster's on Saturday night, but they do not expect children to be doing the shooting. Javier Manzanares is the son of Ciria Quizada who a year ago September 25 was stabbed to death by her estranged boyfriend. She had been on probation for a child abuse or abandonment charge after she was involved in a drunken wreck that injured three unrestrained children passengers. Two boys dropped Eric Morris, five years old, from a high rise apartment building in Chicago. Eric and his older brother told his mother that two boys wanted them to steal candy. They refused and told their mother. Their mother then went to the two boys' mother. She said she couldn't handle her oldest boy. Time for revenge. Eric's brother tried to save him but the other two boys bit and beat on his wrists until he let go. Last Sunday people gathered at the church. Eric's aunt said, "I know the two boys who did this. We gotta' do something to keep them busy". She began to weep. I. We come to the realization that it isn't working. What isn't working? A. One writer puts it this way, "Things of the spirit — such as honor, selflessness, humility, service to others, self-control, fidelity, virtue." 1. We are finding out how difficult it is to reinvent a value system that we severely crippled, if not killed over the past twenty years. "Don't listen to anyone over 30", "Do your own thing", "Just Be", "Make Love not War" which had more to do with lust than love, and more with cowardice than courage. The result of that recklessness produced a nation in which nearly half the adult population can barely read or write. It isn't working. 2. The present that we have created comes in the midst of themes of liberation. We wanted to be free, free from our families, free from our wives, free from our husbands, free from our children, free from limits, free from oppression whether they be white males, the rich, or relationships. It isn't working. We appear to be more enslaved than free. We are liberated from everything and enslaved to loneliness, anxiety and an inability to love and care for others. 3. In elevating the self to the highest pinnacle of adoration like no other generation before us we find it isn't working. Dr. Arthur J. Landwehr Things You Cannot Live Without: A Mentor © 1
