Rising Above It AR! I Corinthians 12.1-11 January 19,1992 Martin Luther King Jr. and Christian Unity Sunday One year ago we watched Jaco of CNN narrating the Scud attack score in the Gulf War. At the end of the year he was in Palm Beach narrating the rape trial of William Kennedy Smith. In between these bookends was the August attempted Soviet coup and the fall's Clarence Thomas/Anita Hill sexual harassment hearings. Sexual ethics, religious ferment in Eastern Europe, the right to die, the mideast breakthrough, SBC, Dead Sea Scrolls, the death of Marxism. One analyst said this was an unprecedented year for mega stories. Mega stories are those that shape us, force us to take sides, and out of which there develops community. Another analyst suggested that it is out of the big stories that we develop a sense of community. There are many communities in which we participate in one degree or another. The Chicago Tribune reported that Naperville is no ordinary suburb. It is a technoburb in which people plug in to their subdivisions. People are from Cress Creek, Brighton Ridge, Hobson Woods, Saybrook, Century Hill, Steeple Run, etc. There are sub-communities, less easily identified. Sub-communities of golfers, those who make up the gun club and other clubs, the academic co mmunity, political co mmunities. There are communities of love and communities of hate. A. The face of hatred in America. Twenty murders were motivated by bias or linked to white supremacists. Three times the level of 89 and highest since Klanwatch began 20 years ago. Anti-Semitic incidents rose to a record of 1685. Incidents on college campuses rose 36%. Anti-gay violence climbed 42%. Anti-Defamation League states there were some 3,000 neo-Nazi skinheads last year. Much of this takes focus in people like David Duke who has found support in D uP age C ounty. B. Last month was a month of celebrations: the birth of Jesus, Roshashana, Yom Kippur, Pearl Harbor, and on December 15th, the bicentennial of the Bill of Rights in which the First Amendment resides: "Congress shall make no law against the establishment of religion or the free exercise thereof...." We are facing today one of the greatest challenges in our history. It is true that we are not a Christian nation. That is promised in the First Amendment. It is also true that Christians make up the majority of the nation; the minority of which is protected under the First A mendment. C. Among these communities is the Christian community. We have been a part of a long tradition that goes back to the birth our nation. We are shaped by the communities we choose to be a part of. 1
