Where To Turn Romans 8.12-17 First Sunday after Pentecost May 25, 1991 When we sing America the words and the music resonate with the deepest feelings within us. Concepts like freedom, justice, the pursuit of happiness, documents such as the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution and the Bill of Rights come to mind. History, the Boston Tea Party, the Revolutionary War, World War I (the war to end all wars), World War II. Heroes, Paul Revere, Benjamin Franklin, George Washington. This is the Spirit of America. We march to its music. We are pulled by its spirit. We are willing to sacrifice for it, most often our young men and women, sometimes the butter o ff our tables, the gasoline for our cars. I. The Spirit within us is a powerful element in our lives when it is appealed to and drawn upon. A. One watches the Bull's. When they are clicking one might say they are of one spirit. Each does what one does best. y - . ] 1. When someone is overcome b y rage, one might say that ( one is captivated by the spirit of anger. Every ounce of 4- energy and intelligence, strength and motivation go into playing out that anger. 2. When someone is able to get others to fe e l the same way about an issue, we say that person is charismatic. B. This season of Pentecost is the time we celebrate the g ift of the Holy Spirit. Through this experience the church becomes charismatic. 1. This was not a new idea. Jews knew about the power of the Spirit. It was the Spirit of the Lord that gave Samson the strength to decimate the Philistines. The Spirit enabled Kings to carry out their god-given responsibilities. The Spirit entered the prophets so they could speak God's word. The power of God is always exhibited through God's spirit through people. Zechariah puts it straight, "not by might, not by power, but by my spirit, says the Lord of hosts." 2. Picture the scene. The disciples had said goodbye to Jesus. He told them to wait in Jerusalem for the Advocate to come, the Holy Spirit, the one who would enable them to carry on the work that God gave Jesus to do. On Pentecost that Spirit came upon them. Like a rushing wind, with tongues of fire hovering over each head. They spoke in several languages so those who heard them heard the Christian story in their own language. While they were waiting a rush of wind, tongues of fire appeared over their heads. 3. Acts 2.1ff. The Spirit right on the spot empowered them to tell the story in the languages of the Parthians, the Medes, Elamites and residents of Mesopotamia.... The gifts that would enable them to proclaim God's word with conviction and persuasion was reaching to those of Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, and the uttermost parts of the earth." 1
