When You Have Your Interview Exodus 3.1-15 March 2, 1986 There isn't a one of us who has not had to have an interview, whether it be for a new job, a performance rating for your present job, or simply attempting to make an impression on someone who matters to you. This morning's message is not going to be taken up on one's wardrobe, or how to analyze what the interviewer is looking for, and what is the best form for one's resume. But it does have something to do with what color is your parachute. Our self-understanding is one that has been analyzed, dissected, programmed by thousands of bits of information that we have accumulated from here and there. But the color of your parachute may not be what we think it to be. "I am who I am" and "I will be who I will be". That's who I am. "You are who you are, and you will be who you will be." Only the free and liberated can say that of themselves. And only the free and the liberated can affirm that for someone else. It is our tendency to categorize people, size them up, get their number, and then through those lenses interpret everything they say or do? Secretary of State George Schultz stood before cameras on Tuesday morning to tell what had happened in the Philippines. Corazon Aquino had been sworn in as president, the former president Ferdinand Marcos was at Clark Air Force Base, and there had been little blood shed in this transference of power. Schultz had expressed his gratitude for Cory Aquino's attitude. "She is a woman of deep religious faith, and her commitment to nonviolence is clear. She does not intend to carry out any program of vengeance on behalf of her husband's death." Later reports spoke of the support she had received from Cardinal Sin of the Roman Catholic Church. When her husband, Benigno Aquino was shot and killed disembarking from an airplane at Manilla International Airport, she kept her grief within the context of a bigger picture. Her husband's casket was open for nine days. During those days the yellow ribbon armband became the symbol of her grief. Thousands upon thousands passed his casket, looked into her eyes, saw the yellow band, as they paid their respects. It was yellow that she would wear again and again throughout her campaign, and the people would remember Benigno Aquino. Elliot L. Richardson in the Washington National Post told of Evelio B. Javier, born October 31, 1942 in Antique Province in the Philippines. In 1981 he received a master's degree from the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard. He was looking for a job. In 1971 he was elected governor of his province at the age of 29. 1
