Let's Build a Church Mark 1.14-20 January 23, 1994 If you were asked, "Where did the church come from?" How would you answer? When did it begin? Who started it? Why did you join? If you are a member. Or why are you visiting here this morning? When people ask, "Where is Grace United Methodist Church? What do you say? Ever since the beginning, God has a people through whom God speaks his Word. Israel, blessed Israel, is blessed with the calling. Our church is God's church and God creates it through his Word become flesh Jesus. I. Jesus builds his church upon a message. Jesus came to Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God, and saying, "The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has come near; repent, and believe in the good news." The hopes and fears of all the years were meeting in this moment of time. A. Tell John what you have seen and heard: the blind receive their sight, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, the poor have good news brought to them. Luke 7.21. The message of power changed lives and created a community of people who were touched by Jesus. It was called the church. 1. This is not a yuppified, success-oriented Jesus in a pinstriped suit and a Wall Street Journal under his arm. 2. Nor is this Jesus a superman, with superhuman strength and x-ray vision. II. Jesus builds his church with people. As Jesus passed along the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon Peter and his brother Andrew casting a net into the sea — for they were fishermen. 17 And Jesus said to them, "Follow me and I will make you fish for people," Fish for people, they did. As ; he went a little farther, he saw James son of Zebedee and his brother John, who were in their boat mending the nets. 20 Immediately he called them; and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men, and followed him. They immediately come upon a person with an unclean spirit; Simon Peter's mother-in-law, and then a leper. A. Simon Peter will be the one who will be told, "Peter upon this rock I will build my church." Look at them! Some fishermen, a tax-collector, a physician, From that time on people sided with the Jesus party — through the rise and fall of empires, to the time in which civilization itself collapsed, through the middle ages to the reformation, the enlightenment to what is today called the post-modern period. B. Nowa Huta, Poland, adjacent to Krakow ancient seat of Polish kings and center of Polish art, culture and spirit since the 13th century. 1. "We need a church", the town's workers said. "A place to worship." The communist party leaders nodded agreeable. "No problem." But the leaders couldn't understand it. Why did they need more? New housing provided by the best planners could design, jobs for everyone, Dr. Arthur J. Landwehr Let's Build a Church! © 1
