Genesis 25.19 34 The Father of Twins June 18, 1989 Much is made of mothering children, but not much is said about fathering them, let alone fathering twins. Every Sunday I meet at least one set of twins, sometimes two. Only recently am I beginning to be able to tell the differences between them. The stories of twins is an amazing one. Many of us know the famous story of the "Jim" twins as they have come to be known. Jim Springer and Jim Lewis were adopted as four week old infants into working class Ohio families. They never met each other until they were 39 years old. Both had law enforcement training and worked part time as deputy sheriffs. Both vacationed in Florida; both drove Chevrolet's. Much has been made of the fact that their lives are marked by a trail of similar names. They married and divorced women named Linda and remarried women named Betty. They named their sons James Allan and James Alan. Both liked math in school, but not spelling. They have identical drinking and smoking patterns and they chew their fingernails down to the nubs. Each suffers from a mixed headache syndrome and began that problem at the age of 18. There are differences as we would expect. It is as if they had both been scripted. One combs hair over his forehead; the other has it slicked back with si deburns. One expresses himself orally better than the other. But these twins in the Bible are different. I. This is the story of a family with twins who are not identical. A. One is born on the heels of the other. One is ruddy complexion, and hairy all over. They named him Esau which means hairy, they also name him Edom which means red. The second one was born holding the heel of the first so he was called Jacob which means he grasps the heel, which also means he deceives. 1. They are very different. One tills the field, the other is a hunter. One is more given to staying home, the other enjoys foraging into the wilds. One is looking forward to receiving his father's blessing which means in this case a healthy inheritance, the other looks forward to living from the benevolence of his brother. 2. Already we are given a hint that this is not the way it will be. She felt movement within her and instead of taking an ultra sound picture she inquires of the Lord. Two nations are in your womb, and two peoples from within you will be separated; one people will be stronger than the other, and the older will serve the younger." The boys are born and we are told: "Isaac loved Esau and Rebecca loved Jacob." 3. One day Jacob is cooking stew when Esau comes bursting through the doorway. "Quick, let me have some of that red stew! I'm famished! "First sell me your birthright." "What good is a birthright to me, I'm starving." "And from that day on Esau spurned his birthright. 3. The contrasts 1 1. Between deferred and immediate material blessing. Esau
