NEWS AND INFORMATION FOR ALUMNI AND FRIENDS OF GARRETT-EVANGELICAL THEOLOGICAL SEMINARY FALL 1979 Seminary in Evanston with Evangelical Theological Seminary, formerly located in Naperville, Illinois. Dr. Northtelt was the chief architect of this union, which brought together two century-old institu-tions. The result was a new institution that has proven to be both academically strong and financially successful. Dr. Northfelt holds numerous leader-ship positions within the United Meth-odist Church and in theological educa-tion. Before becoming president of the seminary, he served the church in vary-ing capacities, including 23 years in pas-toral appointments in the states of Wash-ington and Illinois. He served as superin-tendent of both the Rockford and Chicago Northern Districts of the North-ern Illinois Conference of the United Methodist Church. Five times the confer-ence elected him to represent it at Gen-eral Conference. President Merlyn W.Northfelt Announces Retirement Dr. Merlyn W. Northfelt, president of the seminary, has announced his retire-ment, effective not later than December Andersons Create Scholarship Endowment CORLISS AND CATHERINE ANDERSON, both life trustees, have contributed $100,000 for the establishment of an endowed scholarship fund in their names. Mrs. Anderson was elected to the board in 1970 and Dr. Anderson in 1971, serving as chairman from 1971 to 1975. Dr. An-derson, who was honored for his service to the seminary with a doctorate of humane letters, has been a financial consultant to a number of businesses and organizations. He also holds a B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. from the University of Il-linois. He was professor of finance at Northwestern University and chairman of the finance department in the university's graduate school of managment. The Andersons make their home in Barring-ton, IL. 31, 1980, or earlier if his successor has been elected before then. He has served as president since 1970. William Y. Hutchinson, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the seminary, in ac-cepting Dr. Northfelt's decision to retire, said, "Merlyn Northfelt has provided Garrett-Evangelical Seminary with indis-pensable leadership during one of the most crucial periods in its long history. He will be remembered with honor and affection as long as the seminary exists. On behalf of the trustees I extend to him our profound gratitude." Hutchinson stated that a search com-mittee consisting of representatives of the trustees, faculty, student body, and alumni has been appointed to seek out and screen candidates for the presi-dency. A major accomplishment of Dr. North-felt's administration was the successful merger in 1974 of Garrett Theological DR. MERLYN NORTHFEL T, G-ETS' presi-dent, in acknowledging the gift, re-marked, "The Andersons believe the single most effective way lay people can improve the effectiveness of the ministry is to support theological education. In addition to this impressive single gift, they have consistently given generous annual gifts to the school." Trustee Gifts for Library Addition Two other trustee families have made leadership gifts toward the construction of the new library addition. JOHN AND PHYLLIS TITTLE, have commit-ted $100,000. Mr. Tittle, chairman of the board from 1975-78, is a senior partner of Stein, Roe, and Farnham. He has con-tributed generously in service and funds in respect for the memory of his father, Ernest Fremont Tittle, who was for many years minister of First UMC, Evanston. A life trustee, Mr. Tittle remains active in the governance of the school. WILLIAM AND WINIFRED HUTCHINSON are providing $200,000 for the library addi-tion. Mr. Hutchinson, president of Conti-nental Scale Corporation, became presi-dent of the G-ETS board in 1978. Dr. Northfelt commented, "The Hutch-insons ' and the Tittles both realize the importance of an excellent library to support theological education at the seminary and have been much involved in the development of plans for the addi-tion over the last several years."
