Contact Us (773) 298-3380 xavierite@sxu. edu Lynn O'Linski leaves duties as AD and Softball coach University's next step will be to solidify athletic department By John Normoyle Xavierite Editor Although she has been a mainstay at Saint Xavier University for 21 years, Lynn O'Linski has left SXU and her duties as both Athletic Director and softball coach. No specific reason has been given as to why she left. Dr. Steven Murphy, SXU's Vice President of Student Services and Enrollment, describes the situation as "a personal matter between an individual and the University." He is confident that this will not stunt the massive growth of Cougar Athletics. He said, "This doesn't change our plan for Cougar Athletics. We are going to move ahead." The following statement was distributed within the Athletic Department after the announcement: "Lynn O'Linski is leaving Saint Xavier University, and her position of Athletic Director and Head Softball Coach. In the 21 years since she founded the women's soft- ball team, O'Linski coached the team to over 700 victories. "The period during which she was Athletic Director— since 1988—has been one of tremendous growth in Cougar Athletics. During this time, the number "This doesn 't change our plan for Cougar Athletics. We are going to move ahead." of sports increased from 4 to 9 and the number of student athletes increased from around 50 to over 200. "Coach O'Linski also played a role in the development of new athletic facilities, including numerous fields, the Outdoor Sports Center in 1993, and the Convocation and Athletic Center in 1999. According to SXU President Dr. Richard Yanikoski, 'Saint Xavier University is grateful to. Coach Lynn O'Linski for her many accomplishments on behalf of Cougar Athletics, and we wish her every success in her future endeavors.'" There is little doubt that O'Linski was successful on the softball diamond. She recorded more than 715 wins here at SXU. During her tenure at Saint Xavier, O'Linski coached more than 50 All-District players, 29 Ail-Americans, and 7 Academic Ail-Americans. Her teams won 7 CCAC titles and 3 district titles. She was also inducted into the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) Hall of Fame. Over the past couple of summers, O'Linski was Head Coach of the Virginia Roadsters, a team that participated in the Women's Professional Fastpitch League (WPFL). SXU will now begin its search for both an Athletic Director and a softball coach. However, with the inaugural women's basketball season opening in two weeks, the University will look to move quickly to solidify the Athletic Department, and continue the foward momentum of recent years.
