Page 24 Rancic star of Homecoming events By Nicholas Kerr News Editor This year Homecoming week will be used to launch a series of events that commemorate the 160th anniversary of the founding of Saint Xavier University. The first event in the series will feature a lecture by Chicago area native Bill Rancic. There will also be a concert featuring the music of 1991 Pulitzer Prize winner for Music Shulamit Ran. In addition, homecoming traditions such as Mercy Day and the 5K walk/run will take place this week. The week will end with the first homecoming game at the newly renovated Bruce R. Denton Memorial Field against Saint Francis University. On Sept. 20 Bill Rancic, winner of the first season of NBC's "The Apprentice," will give a lecture on entrepreneurship and ethics as the main event of the Homecoming festivities. The lecture, which is free to the public, will be held in the Shannon Center at 7:00 p.m. Seating for the event will be limited so those wishing to attend are encouraged to come early. After Rancic's speech, he will sign copies of his two books that will also be available for purchase. Rancic also plans to address how he handles being a celebrity. After winning "The Apprentice," he ran the building of the Trump International Hotel and Tower. The building was originally designed to bring the world's tallest building back to Chicago, but plans were scaled back after the September 11 attacks. Before working for Trump, Rancic was highly successful starting up the company cigarsaround theworld.com which makes millions in revenue annually. He recently resigned from the Trump Organizations to pursue other business ventures. SXU Business Professor Christopher Clott told The Xavierite, "As the first 'you're hired' person to be hired by Donald Trump on 'The Apprentice,' Bill Rancic will always be well-known." Clott also added, "beyond the television celebrity though, it is my hope that he can inspire students at Saint Xavier to become entrepreneurs themselves. Our economy needs dynamic individuals who can act on hopes and dreams to achieve success." In addition to the speech, Rancic will meet with six business students to discuss papers they wrote about ethical issues today in business such as the controversial "Big Box" ordinance passed by the Chicago City Council requiring big retailers to pay their employees at ten "Homecoming" continued on page 4 Bill Rancic dollars an hour. One of the benefits of having many of the University's alumni around during Homecoming week is that it gives students a chance to meet alumni and form relationships with them. These relationships could help in finding employment for students after they graduate. To facilitate the formation of these relationships the Alumni and Parent relations, Campus Life and the Counseling and Career Services department are hosting the event "The SXU Connection: Students and Alumni Working Together." The event will be held in the Student sxu celebrates 160th Anniversary By Theresa Kurzeja News Correspondent For students, it's easy to overlook the complex history of Saint Xavier when we are entrenched in studies and hectic work schedules; but this year, our reminders will be more pronounced. This academic year marks the 160th Anniversary of the founding of the University, and to celebrate, the administration has planned numerous lectures, concerts and events to commemorate the rich history of St. Xavier. It has been 160 years since six Sisters of Mercy, including Francis Xavier Warde, came Cardinal George among this year's guests to Chicago and started St. Xavier Academy in the Mercy tradition of Catherine McAuley. They began their Academy championing a Liberal Arts education and aimed to educate all that wanted to learn. Over the years, the Academy has changed locations and names but the vision upon which it was built has withstood the test of time. As a tribute to the years that the University and the Sisters of Mercy have worked to educate students and serve the community, the administration has organized a number of lectures and events to remind the St. Xavier community of the basis of its founding. The events, scheduled throughout the academic year, are meant to entertain the members of the SXU community as well as educate and inspire them to examine the role of faith, service and education in their lives. Beyond the numerous Homecoming Week festivities-including Mercy Day observation and the Cougar 5 k Run/Walk- the University has organized the Catholic Colloquium lecture series "To Be in 'Good Standing'" as part of honoring the 160th Anniversary. This lecture series will feature prominent figures and scholars in the realm of religious academia examining what it is to be in "good standing" with the tenets and beliefs of the Catholic Church post Vatican II. The series is also meant to examine the modern challenges posed to a Catholic University. "160th anniversary" continued on page 2 Nominations for laureate sought By Sean Reynolds News and Copy Editor Time is running out seniors, and if you cannot find a professor to convince with flattery, there's no shame in asking a friend. Until Friday, Sept. 15 the office of Student Affairs is accepting nomination forms from faculty, staff and students for the esteemed Lincoln Academy Medallion. This award, conferring the title of Student Laureate, is awarded each year to one senior from each four-year institution of higher learning in Illinois. Candidates for the award are selected for their "overall excellence in curricular and co-curricular activities." Once nominated, each senior will be informed of this honor by the office of Student Affairs and then have until Oct. 5 to produce one to two endorsements from individuals within the SXU community. From among this final field of candidates one senior selected by Student Affairs as this year's laureate. The laureate will receive a formal presentation of the medallion on behalf of Gov. Rod Blagojevich in the Hall of Representatives at the Old State Capitol in Springfield, Illinois. Last year, the Lincoln Academy Medallion was awarded to class president Sean Gross whose academic excellence as well as involvement in SGA, Campus Ministry and service made him an outstanding candidate.
