Shannon Editor in Chief The Ad-Hoc Faculty Affairs Committee for the Saint Xavier University Emergency Response Team will be holding a special event Wednesday, April 19th from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Atrium, located within the SXU Diner. It will focus on personal preparedness in the face of an emergency. "Personal preparedness is the key when facing an emergency or a catastrophe. We saw in the governmental response to Hurricane Katrina, sometimes you just have to take care of yourself first, and then help those around you," said Jim Hagen, a professor at Saint Xavier University in Public Health and a Certified Emergency Response Coordinator. The emergencies that the Ad-Hoc Committee speaks on can be something as small as a kitchen fire, but they have focused more on larger man-made and natural disasters. The event on April 19th will incorporate both ways to survive all kinds of emergencies. Providing the expert information on personal preparedness will be many different groups, from within the University and from the City of Chicago. Included will be: Chicago Police Department, Chicago Fire Department, the City of Chicago's Emergency Management and Public Health, Saint Xavier Public Safety, a Representative from Peer Ministry and Marquette Bank. Each different group will have a table at the April 19th where their specific department can share the information on how to best react to a natural or man-made disaster. The Chicago Police Department will hold a lecture centering on the Emergency Communication Center and a new plan the City of Chicago has created to help individuals react in the face of an emergency. The Chicago Fire Department will show 10 steps to fire safety. Also included in their talk will be ways of surviving if you have a disability. The City of Chicago's Public Health representative will delve deeper into more dire situations, such as to survive a Bio- Terrorism attack. Chicago's Emergency Management will speak on their new website, www. alertchicago.org. SXU Public Safety will lecture on how best to handle an emergency and stay safe while on campus. Kimberly Henderson, a student and a representative of Peer Ministry, will speak on how to best incorporate personal faith while dealing with a life-threatening disaster. Marquette Bank will be available to inform on how to best protect your financial assets during a disaster. "What is really important is to get all these institutions together and working together. Cooperation with different sectors of the community and larger surrounding area is very important in the face of emergency, and to get representatives from the University, the city of Chicago and the financial sector are very important," said Professor Jim Hagen. While the Ad-Hoc Committee is primarily a faculty-based group, the event coordinator for the committee is a student, senior Brittany Pavlis. Pavlis, who is involved as a part of her Senior Project, sees that personal preparedness is truly important in a disaster. "If you can't take care of yourself, then you can't take care of anyone else," said Pavlis. For more information on how to best react in the face of an emergency, please visit www.alertchicago.org where there are tips for surviving Bio-Terrorism, tornadoes, Bird Flu, etc. Or attend the emergency response event on April 19th.
