Senator Clinton addresses ADI Summit By Nick Kerr Deputy News Editor On December 3d, 2005 the American Democracy Institute (ADI) held their 2005 Midwest regional summit in the Auditorium Theatre of Roosevelt University in Chicago. The event featured many speakers including Governor Blagojevich and the keynote speaker for the event, Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton. The President of Roosevelt University Chuck Middleton started the event off by welcoming those in attendance to his University. John Hart, the CEO and President of the American Democracy Institute, gave the audience a synopsis of the group's goals. Governor Blagojevich took the stage and talked about his ascension from a child growing up in a working class neighborhood to being the Governor of Illinois. He also expressed disappointment with the state Supreme Court who, just the day before struck down a law he was advocating that would make it illegal to sell violent videogames to minors. He made it clear he would continue his efforts to get the law on the books. The next speaker was the President of People's and North Shore Gas Desiree Rogers who spoke about how the companies she heads helps underprivileged families. The final speaker before Senator Clinton was William McNary. He took the occasion to talk about what civil rights issues needed to be addressed by today's leaders. The honor of introducing the New York Senator, who is the honorary chair of ADI's National Youth Incentive, was given to Roosevelt University student Bridget Jones. Mrs. Clinton came out to some national news and was the lead story on the popular Fox News Channel show "The O'Reilly Factor" the following Monday. Before getting into the policy aspects of her remarks, she took time out to thank those in attendance who were in some way were participating in the political process and her own activities as a teenager a warm reception, but was interrupted a few times at the beginning of her speech by protestors critical of her views on the Iraq War. Senator Clinton was politely stern with the protestors when she told them "Give me a chance and I'll address that if you'll then be quiet." This made growing up in the northern suburb of Park Ridge. Senator Clinton started talking about current events issues by speaking out against the genocide going in the Darfur region of Sudan. She wants the UN and other international organizations to play a bigger role in peacekeeping efforts in the region. She also spoke a little bit about education and healthcare, then finished her remarks by talking about Iraq. She stated her position as "I disagree with those who believe we should immediately pull out and I disagree with those who say we should stay there forever." She cited the Iraqi elections that were held on December 15th. Those elections were for a new parliament and the election went off without any major terrorist activity and increased participation among the Sunnis who, because of boycotts by many in the ethnic group, were underrepresented in the last parliament. After the speeches, there was a brief news conference given by Mr. Hart and ADI advisors Jessica Lee and Alexis McGill to members of student media organizations that covered the event. The American Democracy Institute is a "progressive" think tank whose main goal is to get young people involved in politics. A think tank is a organization that formulates policies and strategies to enact their goals. ADI will have a similar meeting in Philadelphia on February 6th, 2006 where Senator Clinton will again be the keynote speaker.
