TheXAVIERITE The student newspaper of Saint Xavier University www.sxu.edu/xavierite Wednesday, November 6, 2002 Volume 72, Number 9 SXU says goodbye to one of its finest By Julianne Siegel Deputy News Editor "That best portion of a good man's life, [His little, nameless, unremembered acts] Of Kindness and of Love." —William Wordsworth On November 6, 2002, the faculty, staff and students of SXU will be saying goodbye to Allison Woods, the Director of Student Activities and First Year Programs here on campus. After almost four years of calling SXU home, Alii will be leaving to pursue her most important goal-the raising of her five-month-old son, Noah. A dedicated mother and faculty member, Alii has devoted her life to the care and nurturing of others, especially the students here at SXU. Alii is dedicated to getting first-year students established and involved within campus life and organizations. She urges students to find their voice, find what they are passionate about and become involved. Her door was always open and inside one could find the friendliest smile awaiting whatever question one had. Alii was always there to help, to inspire and to encourage the students of SXU to do their best and be their best. She was a pillar of strength for the entire SXU community and her warmth radiated throughout the halls. Alii made the SXU experience both exciting as well as challenging. While directing the Student Activities Board, Alii brought many insightful as well as fun programs to the students of SXU. Whether a student was dressing in a hula skirt to earn a trip to Hawaii or learning about HIV prevention or how to eradicate hate within our time, it was moments like these, inspired by Alii, that made the students of SXU feel as if they were Xavierite/Amber Stevens Alii Woods will be leaving her position at SXU to devote more time to her son. truly a part of the SXU family and were making a difference within this community. "I have many favorite memories of SXU. A few that come to mind are working with the SAB, hosting large-scale events such as the Jars of Clay concert and Maya Angelou, Service Day, Taste of SXU, and the great staff and faculty...many of whom are now friends...I think we have accomplished much. The department now includes programs focused on leadership, wellness, diversity, first-year initiatives and philanthropy. The programs are more creative, intentional and well- planned by the Student Activities Board. Student Activities continues to host more programs each semester and create larger, traditional events. "I will miss the students the most. Many of the student leaders I work with I've known in various capacities including volunteering with them in Appalachia or teaching them in SXU Seminar or Public Speaking. They are the reason that I love my job. I have nothing but fond memories of Saint Xavier - the staff/faculty are collaborative and supportive and have helped Student Activities become a better department," Alii remarked. It is rare in today's society to find a person who is genuinely kind and caring. Allison Woods is one of those people. For four years now she has been touching the lives of both students and faculty alike. The students, faculty, staff and staffs of the Xavierite and WXAV 88.3 FM wish Alii all the luck in the world on embarking upon a new journey in her life. We were blessed to have you as part of the SXU community. You have enriched our lives in more ways than you will ever know. You will forever be in our hearts and a part of the spirit that is Saint Xavier University. You were a wonderful teacher, a constant source of motivation and a great friend to many.
