By Melissa Apple News Editor On Saturday, September 28, 508 participants arrived early at SXU to warm up to run or walk in SXU's second annual Cougar 5K run/walk, sponsored by United Parcel Service. Participants were also given bags with various coupons for such places as the SXU bookstore and Mary Kay cosmetics and volunteers handed out UPS water bottles and key chains. The course, which began in parking lot #2, ran through the heart of Evergreen Park and ended up back at SXU. Split times were also provided at the mile marker. Volunteers were staked out at places along the route, both to stop traffic and to give encouragement to the runners/walkers. There was also a spot at the halfway point XavieritelMelissa Apple where cups of water were handed out to the racers. The run began at 9 a.m. with the sound of a horn and the racers were off, racing both for fun and competition. The walk followed at 9:05 a.m. at a more relaxed pace. The beautiful weather provided perfect temperatures for the competition. At the finish line, a digital timer was set up so the racers were given their official time.
