The Xavierite Friday, September 9,1994 The student newspaper of Saint Xavier University Volume 63, Number 1 SAAC candidates look towards the election By Ramon Esparza The Student Activities Board are looking for a few good men and women in the SXU student body to be representatives for the new 1994 Student Activities Advisory Council. The all new SAAC will consist of eight of the following positions: African American Representative, Athletic Student Representative, Commuter Rep- resentative, Continuing Education Representative, Hispanic Representative, International Student Representative, Physically Challenged Representative, and a Residential Representative. The proposed purpose for these positions is to have a stronger link between the SXU stu- ient body and the Student Activities Board. It is the responsibility of each of the SAAC representatives to report to the SAB with any suggestions or comments from their represented group that might better svents and benefit students on and off campus. They will act as a go between informing the SAB about conflicts that their represented group may have. For example, many student activities may be planned without all students in mind and some may be unable to attend. It is then the job of the student(s) to inform their representatives about their conflicts. From there, these individuals are required to take any and all suggestions that students may rise directly to the SAB in hopes thai all conflicts can be resolved. There was a meeting this past Tuesday, Sept. 6 in the student lounge at which students interested in SAAC received a questionnaire in which they were encouraged to express their views. Not everyone returners their questionnaire so here is a preview of some of the new candidates. In the area of commuter representative there are three applicants so far that have responded to the Xavierite Among them are Jill Duba George Rodriguez, and Maris T. Gonsiorek. In the area of residential representatives are Michelle Patchik and Ginny Bustamante. Running for the See SAAC on Page 4 DePaul official appointed as Saint Xavier's new president By Kevin Plienis The search for the new president of SXU has ended with the recent appointment of Dr. Richard Alan Yanikoski. The Board of Trustees and the Corporation of the Sisters of Mercy, Chicago Region, unanimously approved the recommendation of Yanikoski on August 9. Yanikoski was selected from 67 applicants in a nationwide search. Members of the administration, faculty, staff, students and alumni participated in the presidential search process. "I'm delighted to have been selected by the Board of Trustees and the Search Committee to be the new president," said Yanikoski. "It's an exciting opportunity for me, both professionally and personally," commented Yanikoski. Yanikoski has over 19 years of experience in higher education, 18 at DePaul University. His previous positions at DePaul included associate vice president for academic affairs, director of institutional planning and research, evaluation coordinator, and instructor and mentor of DePaul's School for New Learning. Yanikoski has published numerous articles in professional journals. His first book, Academic Freedom in Higher Education, will be published in the near future. Yanikoski has also been a guest speaker, session leader and invited panelist Student Activities Board expresses views Directors explain the functions of their positions to inform students By Ramon Esparza With the birth of the Student Activities Board, Director of Student Activities Kim Johnson hopes students can look forward to the beginning of a new era in student government. Consisting of five financially-compensated student positions, the SAB will be taking place of the recently defunct Student Government Association. The Board consists of: Director of Inter Club Council Vivian Mendez, a sophomore; Director of Public Relations Giovanna Bottari, a senior; Director of Intramurals Scott Kraemer, a senior; Director of Programming Ernie Cherullo, a sophomore; and Director of Finance B.G. Hunter, a sophomore. Mendez is confident that everyone will work together to make SAB a successful new addition to SXU. She stated that "club communication tends to be a problem with organizations." Her job is to mediate what goes on with all the clubs and organizations at school. "I'm glad that work [on student involvement] is finally getting done at Saint Xavier," she said. Bottari's job is to promote upcoming events on and off campus. She feels that the school lacks a certain "spunk" and believes that the SAB may be what SXU needs to liven up campus life and involvement. "You know that sugar rush you get when you eat chocolate? We want [the SXU Community] to have that always." She added, "Since this a commuter school, we realize that people have jobs and lives outside of school, so we're going to try and do as much as we can for everyone." Kraemer believes that with more people being involved in intramural sporting activity, the easier and better things will flow for intramurals. He said that many have complained that there hasn't been a formal existence of intramurals on campus. He is hoping for a good turnout of students this year. He does have some doubts since this is the first year of SAB involvement with intramurals. He is confident, though, that through help from the rest of the Board, P.R., clubs, etc. that the word will get out to get involved. He has a strong feeling that this will be good for the school, eliminating problems in the dorm [such as] boredom. "Now people can't say they don't have anything to do if there is always something going on." Cherullo has been given the job of placing each of the school's events, whether it be in the cafeteria or somewhere in the middle of Chicago. He has the responsibility of setting up contracts and figuring out budgets of any of his plans with banquet halls, theaters, transportation, etc. He commented that the success of programming will depend on students. "We're looking to make Saint Xavier a place you want to be [socially]." He added, "I plan to be hardworking, doing the best that I can do." He has invited all students to contact him with any of their ideas for student activities or events in L101. B.G. Hunter is confident that students and clubs can benefit from him being the new director of finance. Hunter has the responsibility for approving club budgets for any and all of their events. "My job is to lay down the law for who gets money, for what purpose for all the clubs," stated Hunter. The SAB was a new idea for Johnson. After searching other universities across the U.S., via electronic mail, she gathered the kind of programming that she felt would be the most beneficial to the students and fashioned it to fit SXU's demand for more student involvement. Provided that each of the individuals upholds the criteria of his or her position, all five will be paid in eight monthly payments of $250 ($1,000 a semester each), totalling $10,000. If a member of the SAB is removed at any point during their term, then it is Johnson's job to fill the position, using the application and interview process. "We're confident Dr. Yanikoski can lead Saint Xavier University to even higher levels of success as we head into the 21st century." -Marion Faldet SXU Trustee for over 30 professional organizations. "The university is thrilled to have such an established leader in higher education for our new president," said Marion Faldet, Board of Trustee member and presidential search committee chair. "We're confident Dr. Yanikoski can lead Saint Xavier University to even higher levels of success as we head into the 21st Century." Yanikoski will succeed Sister Colette Mahoney, RSHM, who is currently serving as interim president. What's Inside A Rolling Stone See Page 5 Cougar Attack! See Page 8
