Will the “Night Train” from Lake Charles, La., roar into a permanent spot in the Saluki backfield tomorrow night?
Evidently coach Al Kawal is willing to give the freshman speedster a chance, for he had indicated that Jenkins is a probable starting kit halfback, running beside another promising lad, Tom Kilpatrick.
Kawal and SIU fans present at Maconth last Friday night were suite impressed by the sped and hustle shown by “Night Train”
whose actual name is Lane JenKilpatrick also played some. outstanding ball before leaving the contest because of an injury received when Western’s Garron decided to plow through the entire Saluki ball club.
Cecil Hart, who pleased Kawal with his aggressive style of ballcarrying should also see considerable time in Southern’s backfield, and is an outside choice to make the starting lineup.

Jenkins, who saw only a few seconds action in Southern’s last home game against Arkansas State, is a native of Lake Charles, La.
In high school, he ran from several backfield positions as well as; playing end, and was captain and most valuable player. as well as receiving all-state mention in Louisiana.
"Night Train's fame, however, cannot be confined to the gridiron, as he brings an impressive high school track record to SIU with him.
He has run the 100-yard dash in 10 seconds flat, the 440 in 49:9, the 100 low hurdles in 19.8, has broad jumped 23 feet, has high jumped 6 ft., and throws the javelin 180 feet.
