Dupree Takes Second In LA’S 600-Yd Dash
Jim Dupree, Southern’s newly acquired thinclad, finished second in the 600-yard dash, Saturday night, in the Los Angeles Indoor Invitational. The race was won by Arizona State’s Jamaican runner Mel Spence. Joe Mullins was third.
The AAU Open Meet attracted an array of 10 gold medal winners and 15 world record holders. Two new indoor world marks were set; one by shot putter Parry O’Brien and the other by Tennessee State’s Ralph Boston in the broad jump.
Dupree, competing unattached from SIU, was a member of the Southern Illinois Saluki Track Club comprised of fellow Saluki Sonny Hocker and independents Dave and Don Styron.
The foursome, coached by SIU’s Coach Lew Hartzog, failed to qualify for the mile relay. Dave finished fourth in the 60-yard dash that was won by world record holder Roscoe Cook of Oregon.
The meet was video taped and telecast Sunday afternoon on the CBS Sports Spectacular. The attendance for the reunion of Olympians was 12,000 in Los Angeles’ new Sports Arena.
