Southern’s unbeaten Salukis, NAIA’s top ranking small college team. clinched at least a tie for
their first IIAC title by shellacking Eastern Michigan Hurons, 66-8, Saturday night in the home
finale at McAndrew Stadium.
A Parent’s Day crowd of 9000 watched Coach Carmen Piccone’s squad score an almost unbelievable two touhdowns in the first 23 seconds of the game. This set the pace as the Salukis went to rewrite the record book over the hapless Hurons.
Thompson Returns KicKoff
Tackle Jim Thompson returned the opening kicKoff 75-yards for the first Saluki score. Sam Silas
Thompson's running mate at the tackle position, threw a key block to spring Thompson loose on his
TD run.
On the ensuing kickoff Gene Rodriguez recovered the ball in the end zone for the second SIu
touchdown and Tom Bruna plunged for the two-point conversion increasing the Saluki lead to 14-0.
Bullocks Caps Drive
Southern moved 65-yards in nine plays after a Huron punt gave the Salukis possession
their own 35. Bullocks rammed over from 21 yards out and Brostrom kicked the PAT. Piccone's
squad led 21-0 midway through the opening period.
A poor Eastern Michigan punt gave the Salukis possession on the EMU 37. With 8:40 remaining in
the half, Bullocks again went in for the score from four yards out.
