Description
This recording is tape 1 part one of an interview between Southern Illinois University Carbondale undergraduate Cinda Thompson , and her grandfather Anderson Mann "Doc " Thompson . Doc Thompson was a miner , labor organizer , and had a state and federal government career during the administrations of Illinois Governor Henry Horner , and President Harry Truman . Thompson speaks about his family background and childhood . He discusses his career as a miner . During strikes he worked as a policeman , and comments that some strikes lasted between 1-2 years . He discusses being a union member , his promotion to Commissioner of Labor , and handling labor disputes between miners and the companies . Thompson talks about wage strikes , the scabs brought in to replace the striking workers , and the violent incidents between strikers and scabs . He discusses how African American scabs were shot . He concludes by talking about the Herrin Massacre and how he pressured witnesses to testify on behalf of the strikers during the ensuing trial .
