Illinois Wesloeqan University Bulletin SERIES 65, NO. 3 MARCH, 1967 PRESIDENT LLOYD M. BERTHOLF ANNOUNCES RETIREMENT DATE Committee Named to Nominate 15th Wesleyan President President Lloyd M. Bertholf plans to retire from Illinois Wesleyan Uni-versity's top administrative post on July 31, 1968. He made this announcement to the February 14 meeting of the IWU joint Board of Trustees and Official Visitors. Perhaps a few of the mem-bers present had previous intimation of this fact, but to most of them this disclosure was a bombshell. Some asked President Bertholf to reconsider, but he did not yield to the suggestion. He said "I am coming to the age at which faculty members are required to re-tire from full-time work. I have had extraordinarily good health, but at this age one is subject to hazards. It would not be fair to the University to run the risk. I find it strenuous to keep up the pace, and I feel that I should take it easier for my wife's sake and for my sake. The affairs here are becoming more demanding all the time. They deserve the attention of a younger and more vigorous person." President Bertholf said that his post-presidency plans are not definite except that he does not intend to re-main in Bloomington. However, he will stay active doing something-teaching, overseas projects, research, etc. President Bertholf came to IWU on August 1, 1958, so his term of office will cover a full ten years. Board President Paul E. Allison \ / CHRISTIAN -5 HIGHER EDUCATION praised the Bertholf administration for producing "phenomenal growth in quality" at IWU. Mr. Allison said fur-ther- "He (President Bertholf) had the foresight to know how to bring a good staff of faculty and administra-tors to the school, and he had the ability to attract financial support from outside sources. Under his leadership, we gained the combination of an excellent student body and faculty. Wesleyan has bet-tered her facilities and will continue to do so. Many things which he has started will be completed after he has left the school." Stated rules governing the actions of the joint Board of Trustees and Of-ficial Visitors provide for the selec-tion of members of the committee to nominate a new president being chosen from among the University's President Lloyd M. Bertholt Official Visitors. President Bertholf explained that he made the announcement of his re-tirement date at this time so that the nominating committee would have ample time to interview students and faculty members before they leave for the summer recess. KEEP IT BRIGHT WESLEYAN BEGINNING THE SEARCH FOR NEW TOP LEADERSHIP Paul E. Allison (r), president of the Illinois Wesleyan University joint Board of Trustees and Official Visitors, talks with board member Raymond Danielson (1) and Dr. W. Harold Loyd, head of the committee appointed to nominate a replacement for retiring President Lloyd M. Bertholf. Other members of the committee are: Rev. James K. White, Dr. Dale Pitcher, Dr. Charles M. Smith, all of Bloomington; Dr. Jack B. North, Kankakee; Dr. Clifford Brown, Mattoon, and Dr. William W. Bennett, Rock Island.
