IWllonolio an /niorstqBulletin ALUMNI ISSUE AUGUST, 1958 John Yoder Presides Over Wesleyan Alumni JOHN YODER Illinois Wesleyan University alumni "tagged" John Walter Yoder '49 on Alumni Day to direct their affairs for the year 1958-59. Mr. Yoder is no new-comer to responsibility of this kind; he has been a member of the Alumni Council for several terms and has served the Association in numerous official capacities as well as being very active in many civic organizations. Before entering Wesleyan, John served in the navy. Following his grad-uation from IWU, he attended the Drake College of Law. He is now as-sociated with the firm of Costigan, Wollrab & Yoder. He is a member of Phi Gamma Delta and Pi Kappa Delta. He married Patricia Ann Hartman '53; they have a son and a daughter and make their home in Danvers. ALUMNI REPRESENT IWU AT INAUGURATIONS DR. RALPH C. SMEDLEY '03 repre-sented Illinois Wesleyan University at a presidential inauguration on the Chapman College campus, Orange, California, on December 6, 1957. WENDELL E. RALSTON '45 repre-sented Illinois Wesleyan University at a presidential inauguration at Okla-homa City University on March 6, 1958. DR. BERTHOLF TAKES UP REINS AS WESLEYAN'S PRESIDENT Ned Dolan Again Heads Trustees At Wesleyan At the annual meeting of the Board of Trustees and Official Visitors of Illinois Wesleyan University, Ned Dolan was re-elected as president, a position which he has held for a number of years. Other officers and members of the executive committee include - Ben-jamin Weir, vice president; Aaron Brooks, treasurer; Paul Allison, as-sistant treasurer; L. L. Williams, sec-retary; P. W. Kasch, assistant secre-tary; Mr. Dolan, Mr. Weir, Mr. Wil-liams, Mr. Brooks, J. H. Bicket, Rich-ard F. Dunn, O. P. Westervelt, Ken-neth Bulkeley, C. Virgil Martin, and President Lloyd M. Bertholf, executive committee. On the recommendation of Dr. Bert-holf, Dr. Merrill J. Holmes will be in-vested with the title of chancellor of the University upon his retirement. This appointment will involve no ad-ministrative responsibility, but it will provide for such occasional service as President Bertholf and Dr. Holmes may mutually agree upon. ALUMNI OFFICE MANAGER VACATIONED IN EUROPE Heard on Alumni Day were such comments as, "I haven't seen Marcia, and I want to see her while I am here", or "Where is Marcia? I always see her on Alumni Day." There was a reason. To be sure, Marcia Minch '53 has been secretary in the Alumni Office for several years and is currently office manager, so heretofore she has been a busy person on Alumni Day-responsible for many arrangements and the greeting of the HO MEC 2ING October 24"25 An appreciation dinner sponsored by the Bloomington Chamber of Com-merce on July 30th marked the change-over in administration at Illi-nois Wesleyan University. Dr. and Mrs. Merrill J. Holmes were the guests of honor. Dr. Holmes has served in an administrative capacity at IWU for seventeen years, a little less than six years as vice president and a little more than eleven years as president. Louis S. Stevens, president of the Bloomington Chamber of Commerce, presented Dr. Holmes with a plaque expressing the community's apprecia-tion for his efforts and accomplish-ments during these years. Dr. Holmes, in his reply, gave an illuminating and sometimes humorous picture of the tasks of a university president and summed the present position and fu-ture possibilities of Illinois Wesleyan University. Dr. Holmes then passed the "gavel" to Dr. Lloyd M. Bertholf. Dr. Bertholf established confidence with his audience with the dedicated manner in which he accepted his re-sponsibilities as president of this Uni-versity and the outline which he gave of what must be done if Illinois Wes-leyan University is to continue to match its lofty purposes and tradi-tions. Dr. and Mrs. Holmes left the fol-lowing day for an extended vacation trip to Minnesota and Iowa. host of alumni with which she is ac-quainted. This year was different. Miss Minch sailed for Europe the first week in June for an extended vacation which took her to England, the Low Coun-tries and the Brussels World's Fair, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, a n d France. She was back at her desk here the first Monday in August. Commented Miss Minch on a card to the Alumni Office, "I can't get over the beauty and the quaintness of the places here on the continent."
