Mr. & rs. L. S. Kuhn 407 E. Front St. City Illinois Wesleyan University Bulletin ALUMNI ISSUE MARCH, 1950 Federal Aid To Education Subject Of Town Meeting Chimes For Wesleyan, Gift of Mrs. Gulick Returning alumni will be sur-prised and thrilled to hear the sound of chimes floating out over the campus. They are the gift of Mrs. Anna Gulick, who also made Gulick Hall possible. Of unusually sweet tone, the Westminster chimes ring every quarter hour from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday. They will not play on Sunday. In the morning, at noon, and in the evening hymns are played. The new chimes, played for the first time March 3, were a sur-prise to the students. The system was installed by Leon Vanderwater, and the only visible evidence of the carillon system are four speaker horns attached to the chimney of Presser Hall. The mechanism and controls are installed in a small vestibule on the third floor of Press-er. At full power the bells could be heard any place in Bloomington. Music for the bells is a perforated roll similar to those used in player pianos. Mrs. Gulick, although not an alumnus, has been a good friend of the college for many years. Her home was formerly in, Manteno, where she taught music. Her pur-pose in making this splendid gift is to bring the gospel message to the young people. History of IWU Nearly Complete A history of Illinois Wesleyan by Professor Elmo Scott Watson is nearing completion and part of it has gone to the printers. The book will be on sale at Commencement time and may be ordered by any of the alumni. Professor Watson has spent many months on this and he has put in long hours going over old papers and magazines, unearth-ing much new material. He has re-ceived help from alumni and friends all over the country. Senator Scott Lucas will be one of the speakers at "American Town Meeting of the Air" Tuesday, March 21, when it comes to Bloomington. The other speaker will be Dr. Laur-ence Gould, president of Carleton College. Senator Lucas will uphold the idea of federal aid to educa-tion, and Dr. Gould will oppose it. George V. Denny Jr., founder of Town Meeting, will preside. The broadcast will be heard coast to coast over 267 stations of the American Broadcasting Company. It will originate in the Blooming-ton Consistory under the sponsor-ship of Illinois Wesleyan, the Daily Pantagraph, and station WJBC. All alumni are urged to listen to the broadcast at 8 p.m., central stan-dard time. Tickets for the broad-cast are on sale at the Wesleyan Memorial Center, The Daily Panta-graph, W. B. Read & Company, and station WJBC. Alumni living near may obtain tickets through any one of these places. Senator Scott Lucas graduated from the Illinois Wesleyan Law school in 1914. After being admitted to the bar, he practiced law in Ha-vana, Illinois. He was state's at-torney for Mason County and chair-man of the Illinois State Tax Com-mission 1933-35. He served as a member of the 74th and 75th Con-gress and was elected to the U. S. Senate in 1938. He was re-elected to the Senate in 1944. In 1947 he became minority leader in the Sen-ate, and in 1949, became majority leader. Dr. Laurence Gould is a graduate of the University of Michigan. He holds degrees from several univer-sities. He was a geology instructor at Michigan, began teaching at Carleton College, advancing from assistant to a full professor, and in 1945 became president of Carle-ton. He went on a geographical ex-pedition to Greenland in 1926 and was with the Putnam Baffin expe- Events of Centennial Year American Town Meeting of the Air Broadcast, March 21 Commencement, June 3-5 Meeting of Illinois Conference, June 5-11 Homecoming, November 3-5 Centennial Pageant Art Purchase Show Educational Conference, December 2 Alumni Meetings from coast to coast, December 2 Class of 1900 to Be Honored The class of 1900 will celebrate its 50th anniversary on Alumni Day, Saturday, June 3.
