ILLINOIS WESLEYAN UNIVERSITY The eyes of Argus are upon me, and no slip will pass unnoticed. -George Washington Friday, December 10, 1971, Bloomington, Illinois 61701 Girattes Orphans PHOTOS BY LINDA ROURKE Everyone - Merry Christmas and a Happy New Ye Senateponders Argus proems !arl In surprise action last Sunday, Student Union Iommission chairman Sue Elliott moved that Senate remove Argus editor Tom Wetzel. The motion was seconded. In other action, two senators and the elections chairman were removed be-cause of excessive absences. Sue Elliott said reasons for her mo-tion stemmed from "less than satisfac-tory" coverage of SUC events, and the Joint council creates ambi guity: Eckley Dr. Robert S. Eckley, president of the university, commented that the ad-vantage to a joint council such as the one proposed by Steve Knapp is that it "provides a vehicle for binding the var-ious internial constituencies of the uni-versity together in a compact." Eckley noted, however, that a juris-dictional conflict with other organiza-tions might develop. He pointed to an example at Lawrence College, which has a joint council,, where the council ap-proved one plan while the faculty re-jected the idea. The president also'mentioned the fact that at schools where such a council has developed, "the student government has gone to a rapid demise." Illinois State University, Luther Col-lege and Lawrence have adopted a joint form of university government. Eckley said that the relationships "with the of-ficial governing body are in most cases ambiguous." Eckley feels that "Wesleyan may have a superior mechanism through the fre-quent informal meetings of faculty, stu-dent and administrative leaders, and the extensive system of committee cross-membership, visitors and advisors. The ,test for any system is whether or not it works." .fact; that the. Argus had not yet:turned in =a record of its books, due in Novem-ber. WHEN CLAIMS were made that the Argus financial situation was unclear to many people, Wetzel said that a recent changeover in business managers has complicated matters. He also stated figures which purported to show that the Argus as of now is running in the black. In the meeting, Wayne Messmer, sena-tor from Phi Mu Alpha, Toni Payne, senator from Pfeiffer, and elections chairman Marilynne Shurna have all been removed for excessive absences. EACH SENATOR is allowed 6 absences during the- school year. Nora Hamill and Dave Petersen are recorded as hav-ing five absences each. Phi Mu Alpha and Pfeiffer will have no representa-tion until a new election is held and the executive committee is notified of the change.
