Louis 1 Providence Journal foljan- The Verdandi Chorus gave its 41st anniversary concert in Plantations Auditorium yesterday afternoon. The concerts of this singing society are always welcome and admirable and at this hearing it seemed that its usu- Oscar Ekeberg. al qualities were of more than their usual interest and musical impression. Never before has the work been so musical and satisfying, accent more acute, tonal contrasts more effective and dramatic, the tenors more clear, basses more richly resonant and vi-brant, or the presentation more sin-cere and convincing. Oscar Ekeberg is one 'who achieves musical success by painstaking and thoughtful rehearsal without seeking to impress with waving of arms, tip-toe attitudes or butterfly figures in the air. He lets the music speak for the men, who are so well trained that they observe shadings, tonal gradua-tions and precision of attack without conductorial gymnastics and showman-ship. The results he gets are excel-lent. Diction is clear and crisp, the chorus sings in tune and there are many praiseworthy phrases where the air receives melodic prominence over a very beautiful choral accompaniment. The verve of the marching songs, the acuity of musical expression of Alfred Berg's "The Sea," the reposeful pianis-simo effects of "The Diamond on the March Snow," by Gjerstrom, and the musical expression of Kerling's "Saga on the Viking Mound" were conspicu-ous. Solos in Abt's "Ave Maria" were sung by E. Erichson and H. Carlson. This song was so cordially received that it was repeated, and the chorus gave encore numbers after each group. One of ihcsc, "My Grandsire," was composed by Carl Syborn of New York, who was present in the audi-ence and was very warmly applauded. The chorus was assisted by Doro-thea Hcrmanson Dcrwick, soprano. She sings delightfully. Her diction in Italian, German, Swedish and English was good, she sings in tune, is sen-sitive to the artistic and musical de-mands of her songs and reaches dra-matic heights wilhout effort. She made a very favorable impression. Edith Gyl-lenbcrg- Waxberg played artistic ac-companiment with discerning sympa-thy. It was an afternoon of beautiful music delightfully sung. The nrogram: "Langtan till Landet" ("Spring Song") Lindblad "Saga pa Kampcns Hog" ("Saga on the Viking's Mound") Korling "Sommarfrid i Solelid" (Summer Idyll") ; Wideen Chorus Aria, "Pace, Pace, Mio Dio," from "La Eorza del Destino" Verdi Mrs. Derwik "Glorious. Forever" Rachmaninoff
