Published by the American Union of Swedish Singers In its 119th year of Performing Svenska SAnger in America www.auss.org Volume CXIX December, 2011 No. 10 Portland Choruses are Busy Beavers and Have Fun, Too! On November 12, the Scandia Ladies Chorus and Scandinavian Chorus of Portland, Oregon held a "mini" baking session in prepa-ration for a Lutfisk dinner, which was held the next day at Norse Hall in Portland. But, that was just a warm-up for the "super marathon." That will happen December 1 from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., and then con-tinue on Friday, December 2 from 8:00 a.m. until noon. The baking takes place at the Bethany Pres-byterian Church, which has six large ovens in the large main kitchen, and two more in the Fel-lowship Hall. They can actually cook 36 cardamom braids at a time in the main kitchen alone. Then, they will sell all those de-licious items at the ScanFair at the Memorial Coliseum, which runs Saturday and Sunday, December 3rd and 4th. The choruses will be singing for the crowning of the new Lucia at noon on Sunday. Starting on December 10, they will sing for a variety of holiday events, first for a Swedish Christ-mas program at St. Paul's Luthe-ran Church. Then, at a Norwe-gian Service at Central Lutheran Church on December 18. The fol-lowing day, they will sing at the Grotto in Portland. Then, it's the 7:00 a.m. J u l o t t a Service on Christmas Day at the First Imman-uel Lutheran Church, where they rehearse. In between, they will enjoy a Christmas party for chorus mem-bers, families, and friends on De-cember 12. If this sounds like a lot of fun, it is! Join in! A good time to join would be at their monthly Soup Supper on January 9 at First Im-manuel Lutheran Church. Dinner is at 6:00 p.m., followed by prac-tice at 7:00. Welcome! Above: Three generations of Ottos: Lauren Cristofferson, Paul Otto, Heather Cristofferson, Kevin Cristofferson, Lila Otto, Kelly Otto. They are definitely a valuable family to the Portland Choruses, and the AUSS. Other pictures from the "mini" baking adventure: Below left: Lila Otto cleans up milk in the refrigerator...Jody Jones was holding a sharp knife, when her hand flew off something she was lifting on the bottom shelf of the refrigerator. She stabbed the bottom of an unopened gallon of milk sitting on the middle shelf. Milk showered down on the surprised people and made a huge mess. Jody had to pour milk from the bottom of the wounded gallon that produced the mess. Below right: Alana Mapes, Kevin Cristofferson, and Gayle Grossen find humor in the milk situation. Far left: Judy Solanki fills her icing, ready to pipe it on to the tea rings. Near left: Alana Mapes with her lovely apron. And, she did get lots of hugs! Below: The Portland's Men's Chorus has become a valuable part of our baking. Tom Bradford, Joyce Masters, Hans Lundin, and Don Masters check out the glazing of the cardamom braids, and sprinkle with the pearl sugar. At right: the delicious results.
