Image from Board of Trustees Records (Western Illinois University)Western Illinois University was chartered as the Western Illinois State Normal School (WISNS) in 1899 and opened to students in 1902. Like other Normal schools, WISNS was established to educate teachers for the state's grammar schools. In 1921, the school's name changed to Western Illinois State Teachers College and in 1957, with an increasingly broader mission, it became Western Illinois University.

This collection, which documents the early governance of the school by its Board of Trustees, includes board minutes for the years 1899-1917.
