Annual yearbooks, directories and congregational statistics were published as early as the 1880s by the Swedish Evangelical Free Church and the Norwegian-Danish Free Church Association, the two predecessors of the modern EFCA. This practice continued after their merger in 1950 and directories are published to this day. A yearbook typically consisted of: a directory listing names of Free Churches, pastors, and sometimes other information; a report book listing the discussions, decisions, and statistics gathered by the denomination at their annual conference; and minutes of meetings held by committees at said conferences. Sometimes the material was published as one volume and at other times separately. Starting in the 2000s, the reports and minutes were published and distributed digitally to members of the EFCA attending the conference. Note that some digitally-published materials have been excluded from the reports as they were intended for internal use.

The EFCA Yearbooks are significant for tracking the spread of EFCA churches and people across the United States over time. The Yearbooks list year after year the name, location, and address of various churches, as well as names of pastors and organization leaders (e.g. Choir, Sunday Schools, Young Peoples' Societies, etc.). Some listings will occasionally include membership figures, allowing the reader to tally the growth of individual congregations over time, where possible. The Annual Reports and Minutes also give the reader a chance to examine the polity and decision-making process of the EFCA.

The EFCA Archives and the staff at Trinity International University's Rolfing Library will add yearbooks and related materials to this collection as they are published annually. A near-complete run of the directories/yearbooks can be found at the EFCA archives in Minneapolis, with Rolfing Library possessing copies going back to 1935.
