From 1979 through 1993, the School of Education at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville published an innovative, grassroots journal intended to facilitate the sharing of ideas regarding the teaching of mathematics among a network of school teachers. Dr. Thomas Clement O'Brien, a professor of elementary education and head of the Teachers' Center Project at SIUE, served as the guiding force and editor for Seedbed throughout its lifespan. Shirley A. Casey and Dr. Barbara Goldenhersh participated in editorial activities on Seedbed as well.
Thomas C. O'Brien joined the SIUE faculty in 1970. He earned his degrees at Iona College, Columbia University, and New York University. O'Brien believed in teaching mathematical problem solving skills to elementary school children. He traveled widely, presented frequently, and published many articles and books in support of his beliefs. O'Brien became an early advocate for the use of computers in mathematics education and designed problem-solving software products as well. O'Brien died on December 6, 2010, at the age of 72.
The Seedbed digital collection contains all forty-two published issues of the journal. Also included to provide historical context is An Evaluation of the Teachers' Center Project by Edward Mikel (1980) plus a bibliography of Thomas C. O'Brien's scholarship. This digital collection was created by Lovejoy Library in 2015. The Project Director was Stephen Kerber, who also wrote the home page text. The original materials are preserved in the Louisa H. Bowen University Archives and Special Collections of Lovejoy Library.
