The Andrew J. Theising Collection contains a fascinating variety of textual and visual materials as well as memorabilia that document the complex, evolving history and culture of the industrial suburb of East St. Louis, Illinois, during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Dr. Andrew J. Theising, a professor of political science at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, made the first of an ongoing series of gifts of East St. Louis resources to the Louisa H. Bowen University Archives & Special Collections unit of SIUE's Library & Information Services (LIS) beginning in 2003. Theising received his B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. degrees in political science from the University of Missouri at St. Louis. His publications include: Made in USA: East St. Louis, the Rise and Fall of An Industrial River Town (2003), companion to an Emmy-winning PBS documentary; "The Hollow Prize of East St. Louis: How Institutional Function and Institutional Culture Limited a City's Future" (2008); The Making of an All-American City: East St. Louis at 150 (2010); and East St. Louis (2011).

The digital version of the Andrew J. Theising Collection presents an introductory sampler of scanned images derived from the physical collection. Stephen Kerber conceived and authored this digital collection. Jamie Lanman and Virginia Stricklin scanned the original materials. Marlee Graser and Jamie Lanman provided the digital presentation and metadata.
