The Audiovisual & Recorded Sound Materials is a collection of audio and audiovisual recordings from several university archives and manuscripts collections in the Special Collections Research Center, Southern Illinois University Carbondale. This collection serves as a home for recordings found in predominantly paper-based collections, that are worthy of digitization and online access, but are too few in number to justify a standalone digital collection.

At present, the majority of the recordings are from the University Archives Audiotape Collection, an artificial collection of audio recordings created during the 1960s and 1970s as part of various faculty or personal interest projects, and compiled by SIUC archivists over the years. Many of these recordings are interviews with noteworthy philosophers and colleagues of John Dewey, created during the early years of the Dewey Project and the Center for Dewey Studies, by SIUC philosophy faculty members S. Morris Eames, Elizabeth Ramsden Eames, and archivist Kenneth Duckett. Also included are several items documenting SIU history such as Carbondale and Edwardsville commencement ceremonies, building groundbreaking ceremonies, recorded philosophical lectures, and oral history interviews with individuals such as Charles D. Tenney, Elizabeth Opal Stone, and Mary Entsminger. Other large sets of recordings include several interviews with Caresse Crosby regarding the Black Sun Press publications upon donation to SIUC, as well as Irish scholar Eoin O'Mahony discussing numerous historical Irish figures in literature, politics, and religion.

Katherine Dunham's ethnographic field recordings created in Haiti in the 1930's, originally on wax cylinder, are also in this collection, as well as videos of Buckminster Fuller's World Game lectures.

Additional items will be added to this collection over time.
