"You are the only reason for the appearance of this new publication, 'The North Parker,'" declared the inaugural issue of North Park University's alumni publication. "But I am glad that this reason is adequate. A group as fine as the North Park College Alumni deserves its own medium of communication."

Thus began the North Parker, which showcased news and stories about North Park and its alumni. Beginning publication in 1935, the North Parker sought to create a sense of shared community between the school and its graduates. As they left college, the North Parker would share the significant life developments of its graduates. It paired these stories with news about campus development, calls to donate to the Alumni Fund, and write-ups on events such as Homecoming.

The North Parker collection offers readers a different perspective on the school than related collections such as the in-the-moment student newspaper North Park Press and the retrospective Cupola. In some respects it provides a glimpse into the next chapter of the lives of students and professors who were formed by North Park. The newsletter also displays the changing attitudes and values on and off campus over time.

The North Parker has gone through several format changes throughout its history. When it started in 1935, it was printed in a 4-page newspaper format. In 1959, the publication was changed to a magazine format and was briefly renamed The New North Parker. The name was changed back in 1962 but largely retained the magazine design. The North Parker is still published to this day.

The numbering of issues and volumes is occasionally inconsistent throughout the North Parker's history, and errors sometimes appear. We attempt to point out mistakes when possible in the "Notes" section of any given issue.

Additional volumes of the North Parker will be added as time and resources allow. The F.M. Johnson Archives and Special Collections possesses a nearly-complete set of North Parker that is available to interested parties. Please contact archives staff at archives@northpark.edu or (773) 244-6224 for more information, or if you wish to make an appointment to visit or research.
