Over 400 Attend "Entre Nosotros" - Humboldt Park Hosts Historic Diabetes Summit: Elected Officials, Community Leaders, Health Providers and Residents Unite to Address Puerto Rican Diabetes Crisis. Diabetes is a real killer in the Puerto Rican community of East Humboldt Park—three times the national average according to study released on December 6, 2006, "Disproportionate Impact of Diabetes in a Puerto Rican Community of Chicago." The Sinai Urban Health Institute (SUHI) conducted the study and it asserted that almost 21% of Puerto Ricans in this area were diagnosed with diabetes, compared to whites (3.5%) and African-American (14.5%) who live in West Town-Humboldt Park. The Humboldt Park Diabetes Tast Force, composed of community based organizations and agencies, research institutes and hospitals, decided it wasn't enough to merely report the results. They released the SUHI study with a set of recommendations. One of these recommendations to "Increase awareness of diabetes and made diabetes a community wide priority," was realized just last month. On Friday, March 16, Humboldt Park community organizations and elected officials held a conference entitled "Entre Nosotros" A Summit on Diabetes and Latino Healthcare. Over 400 community residents, public health folks, medical professionals, city officials and elected officials attended the summit held at Rebaño Compañerismo Cristiano Church on Paseo Boricua.
