As chairs and bleacher seats began to fill up, fans headed toward the floor to get a closer view of Jars of Clay and the two opening performers, David Wilcox and Burlap to Cashmere. The concert began promptly at 7:30 as David Wilcox took to the stage. Only accompanied by an acoustic guitar, he entertained the crowd as last minute fans filled the CAC. Following Wilcox, was a surprisingly entertaining performance by Burlap to Cashmere. Although not a commercially popular band, the group did have several followers who sang along as they performed. Finally the moment the crowd Xavierite/Andrew P. Dunning Over 2300 packed the Convocation and Athletic Center for the Jars of Clay concert, Tuesday, March 28. was anticipating arrived. Starting with their current billboard single, "Unforgetful You," Jars of Clay took the stage with a thunderous round of applause by the over 2300 fans that attended. "I've been to three concerts this week, Brittany Spears, Mariah Carey and Jars of Clay and this one was definitely the best," commented Megan Stolte, 18, of Downers Grove. "I thought it was a great show," chimed in her older sister Amanda Stolte. Jars of Clay continued their set See CONCERT page 6 Matthews to say 'good-bye' to SXU By Jennifer Koziel Contributor George Matthews, vice president for Academic Affairs will be leaving SXU at the end of this semester to pursue his new role as President of Lourdes College. One of Saint Xavier University's most cherished staff members, Dr. George Matthews, vice president for Academic Affairs has resigned in order to pursue the role of president at Lourdes College in Ohio. Matthews will leave us following the end of this semester. Matthews came to SXU in May 1995 with 25 years experience as a professor and administrator in higher education some of which include, Paul Smith College (New York), La Roche College (Pittsburgh), and Missouri Western State College (St. Joseph). He received his baccalaureate degree in English from Iona Col- lege, his master's degree in English from DePaul University and his doctorate in American Literature from the University of Iowa. As Vice President of Academic Affairs, Matthews has the responsibility of overseeing all academic programs, the support systems of the University which include, the library, Academic Advising, Registrar's Office, Media Services, The Adult College and the International Studies program. He is also responsible for the hiring of faculty members as well as providing any recommendation to the president in regards to the tenure and promotion of faculty members. He also deals with student appeals. Over the years, he has belonged to a number of professional organizations dealing with issues in higher education, and has also served on statewide commissions and regional task forces pertaining to topics of assessment and accreditation. Matthews has been a consultant- evaluator for the Commission on Higher Education. When asked what would he bring to the role as president of Lourdes College, Matthews responded, "I have expertise in matter of long range development, assessment, strategic planning and curricular development as well as a number of other areas dealing with faculty matters."
