carnival . . chorus . . bands . . an imals and people mix these all together with plenty of spice and you have the annual knox county fair this year believe it or not the eighty third annual and robert egan galesburg attorney who is serving this season as secretary and treasurer for the event assures you that the entertainment to be provided will excell that of any previous year in color interest and fun and worthwhile contests and edu cational projects serving with attorney egan as executive officers are l w cramer of delong president and dr h m rinehart of knoxville vice-president directors who have ably assisted mr egan in bringing to knoxville for the period august 1-2-3-4 all the necessary ingredients to make a county fair a happy and success ful one are kirk mcdowell vic toria guy routh herman clyde kenny persifer clyde olinger abingdon and paul peters galesburg air egan announces such highlights as agnew's band rodeo famous broadcasting band there will he says be a com plete change of program daily sometimes twice daily he an nounces the following contests and premiums many of which are higher than ever before in the history of the county premiums offered in the monroe had as their guest mr allen monroe and his friend mr todd of de troit mich also visiting rev and mrs monroe are their brother mr clarence bell of rock island 111 and mr and mrs robertj tucker of rock island 111 mrs perna davis of monmouth is ill mrs mabel haley mrs maryj gopdman and son are going to rome n v to visit their sister priscilla club held their third picnic the modern priscilla club of galesburg with 20 members motored to shelbina mo they were met by the paris mo mod ern priscilla club and shelbina where they held their third an nual picnic those who went from here are as follows mesdames lucy brown jennie johnson nettie jenkins minnie kelly fannie jackson carrie butler malindk donaldson gertrude edwards mrs minnie crozier mrs sadie byrd john huff hattie milburn sadie wagner mr bryant gresby bertha jewell agnes peoples messrs pearl kelly goldie og den john taylor and richard brown the party left here at 4 a.m and arrived in shelbina mo at 8 a.m they left shelbina called to quincy 111 recently at the bedside of his father who had a stroke miss helen carr a prominent school teacher of hannibal mo is in the city as the house guest of her aunt mrs minnie kelly mrs marie kelly entertained eight at a luncheon wednesday at 1 o'clock in honor of her cou sin miss helen car the color scheme was blue crystal glass ware and snapdragons decorated the table mr l c carter has as his house guest his sister miss es tella carter of chicago who is employed as clerk in a large in surance office miss anna mary wallace of ed monton canada is visiting rel atives and friends at monmouth 111 mrs anna letcher has re turned from hannibal mo where she was the guest of her sister mrs lizzie evans mr david garnett and mr ed ward payne have returned from chicago a world of food by marjobie thorp mrs mollie butler subject of local poet the singer ann elphicl's subject for this poem one of a series ot personal poems inspired by real balesburg individuals is mrs mollie butler who lives in an orderly flower boxed cottage on west main street mrs elphick's inspiration came from one brief contact inly with mrs butler or rather her lovely voice for those who heard the crucifixion as it was sung early this spring by negro voices raised heavenward trained by prof thomas williams of knox col lege the opening aria as sung by a single human voice will ever stand out those eighteen words of the saviour's own climaxed with and now 1 shall pray ' were rendered by mrs butler who sang them with all her might and heart force and mrs butler is eighty-six years of age of mrs mollle butler the singer there comes a moment in the flashing years of tumbling days of toil and nights of pain in their unequal passing and again mid bounteous sowings scanty reapings tears the anguish of the exile and their fears of menacing unknown the unquiet dark that frights the motherless child and the stark reality of earth piled high life's paid arrears when a singer lifts her lovely song and then the weary mourner knows the healing flow of tears the exile lifts his eyes to the eternal hills the hungry feeds on spir itual food that fills in the place named geth semane , easter nears the honor were mrs ella taylor mrs jessie picket of mt pleasant lowa miss helen carr of hannibal mo and mrs nettie jenkens mrs julia perkiris of chicago heights 111 and formerly of galesburg is visiting her sister mrs addie williams and meeting many old friends attend colored women's meeting at boston mass mrs matilda griffin and mrs addie garnett accompanied by david garnett and edward payne left tuesday morning for chicago where the women joined delega tions from illinois michigan and ( wisconsin and other northern states en route to the national j convention of colored women convening in boston mass july 21-28 at a recent state meeting in quincy mrs griffin and mrs garnett were appointed as dele gates along with forty other wo men who will represent the state of illinois the trip includes a sightseeing tour of niagara falls and boston the group will return by way of new york city where they will have an opportunity to visit the world's fair a stopover at wash ington d.c will also be a fea ture of the trip mr and mrs james taylor have as their house guest their daughter mrs fritzgerald of kentucky miss idalene nunley left on the zephyr for kansas city mo monday to visit friends third annual kiddies picnic sunday aug 13 the illinois star will sponsor the third annual picnic for the children of galesburg sunday august 13 at lake storey beach everything will be free for them there will be plenty of ice cream soda pop pop corn candy bal loons novelties caps noise mak ers the committee ia sparing no pains to make this a grand af fair there will be plenty o prizes for contestants come out and bring the child ren and help make this a grand affair the following entertainers will be on hand to furnish amuse ment bennie williams larence hendricks dorothy puckett eliz abeth smallwood dorothy finly doris kinly walter early hei bert bloom piano player floyd smoke williams and ed payne and band there will be speaking by one of the outstanding members of our group at 2 p.m there will be a soft ball game between the ccc boys of aledo and scandia bakery teims come out and bring the kiddies and help make this picnic bigger and better than ever free ice cream and candy and balloons for all the kiddies final details arc made for kiddies picnic all galesburg is making pre paration for participation at the kiddies picnic sunday aug 13 at the beach at lake storey if fine weather prevails the crowd should easily reach the 3000 mark the illinois star wante to thank our merchants and individ uals for cooperating to make this a bigger and better picnic than ever joe louis signs for 20-round go with bob pastor detroit mich july 21 heavyweight champion joe louis and bob pastor formally signed articles here wednesday for their 20-round fight at briggs stadium sept 20 others on hond were mike jacobs promoter john j hettche michigan boxing com missioner john roxborough and julian black co-managers of louis and james j johns pastor's manager louis then caught a plane for chicago where he was to referee one of the cyo vs irish teams bouts wednesday night former resident visiting parents mr herbert wallace of wash ington d.c who is a galesburj product and is employed in the government printing office has served in that department for three and one-half years he is here visiting his parents mr and mrs preston wallace he has also visited in chicago and will visit in cincinnati ohio on his way home mr elgie wallace of mon mouth is on the sick list
