Ottumwa, Iowa Oct 30th My own dearest Carl:- Peace! I started a letter to you last eve, but wasnt in the right mood so tore it up. I cant say Im feeling very gay, not, have just returned from a funeral. One of the boys who lives just a few houses above us, died yesterday of tuberculosis. So you are at Sunnyside, that is certainly great, and can stay over Monday, thats all the nicer. Will address this letter there, then. Miss Erlandson, Mrs. Tillman to be is at Rev. Henrys now, they are to be married tomorrow, I hear. Mrs. Sanders is also here, they are moving to Salina, now. Rev. Sandeen is at his own home, he was to preach for his father today. We had to have services in the basement today, as the furnace isnt in order yet. Wednesday that social is coming off so was busy distributing invitations this morning after church. Tues. eve the Loyals are going to have a Halloween party, so will be kept busy the first part of the week. Last Thursday eve the Irving bunch had a Halloween party in the first room of the Irving school. Had a great time and an exciting one, part of the excitement was not planned for. We had a fine supper and tried a lot of Halloween stunts of course, when we were bobbing for apples one of the girls opened the cloakroom door, the cloakroom served as pantry that night, and as she did so a big boy or a man ran from there into the hall. As soon as we got our wits together we grabbed broomsticks and a candle and started after him, but we didnt dare get far away from the light, so we didnt find the intruder. Then we came back and started to have some more fun when we heard the awfullest noise in the front hall, we grabbed out brooms and ran out there, all we saw was the front door standing wide open, so out we went and some ran one way arouns the building, and some another but we were afraid to go to the whole way around. When we got back to the front, four or five boys jumped up out of the flower bed in the front yard and ha! Had! at us, when started toward them they ran across the street. In the meantime four of the girls had gone back to the room where he had supper, there were no lights there, and waited thinking perhaps some might come in that way. He stayed in the front part of the building laughing and talking so the boys I guess thot we were all there. So first thing you know, those four girls heard a back window in the room open and in came a boy and came clear up to the table and was feeling about when the girls went for him he made for the window but the girls got heold of him in time, then they screamed and we came on a tear thru the hall and one of the girls telephones for a police, who came and took him to the station. Actually we were so excited we could scarcely do a thing after that. I guess we wont be bothered if we have any more spreads there. Yes, I recovered the October number of the Observer, Thank you! But I didnt know it until yesterday, I happened to tell mamma you asked if I was still getting the Observer. Then she said it had come. I spose it wasnt with my other mail, for in some way I hadnt seen it. I read it last eve, a good part of it. I am writing this on the installment plan have been walking with Emma and Anna since started this. Have just finished supper now. Had another payday yesterday, it seems nice not to be broke, again. I spose you will get rich these days you are on the farm, not so? I spose you will preach fro Rev. Nordgren tonight. Are the folks all week, hope so. Gustaf is there I spose. Greet them all from me. Want to go bible class so guess I will have to close, it seems like I had some things to tell you, but cant think of them now, so Goodbye for this time. With much love Your very own Mabel.
